Engaging communities in envisioning the future of a bridge underpass

Project Overview

As part of the Trail Foundation’s redevelopment of the Drake Bridge Commons at Butler Trail, Civic Arts was brought on to help engage Austin’s communities in envisioning the space's future. Public engagement for Drake Bridge Commons was developed into a three-part strategy that included a one-day onsite event, a two-week online survey, and five micro-engagements with improv actors at various locations along the Trail. 

These engagements gave the public opportunities to provide input on conceptual sketches of the site using standard survey practices. They also created imaginative spaces with artists to explore the space's identity, its importance and meaning to the community, and possibilities for its future.
