ArtPlace America

Building partnerships to support the development of creative placemaking practices within local government

2019-2020

Project Overview

ArtPlace America is a collaboration of foundations, federal agencies, and financial institutions who share the mission of positioning arts and culture as a core sector of community planning and development. ArtPlace has observed and heard from practitioners that local government is playing a key partnership role in facilitating creative placemaking projects by addressing a wide range of challenges that community planners and development workers face.

In partnership with Civic Arts, ArtPlace is looking to support and grow the different ways in which local government staff and elected officials draw on the power of arts-based development practices for their communities. To accomplish this task. two professional development organizations have been identified - Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL) and the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) - to help frame, create, and disseminate local government specific materials on creative placemaking, and to grow the networks needed for this area of practice to develop into the future.

Civic Arts is helping ArtPlace America lead these two partnerships as they discover the wisdom and tools used by local practitioners from across the nation who are engaging these practices. Through the coordination of a field scan, podcasts, blogs, webinars, and online cohorts, these partners will share that information back to the larger local government community.
