In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the arts sector is recovering from crisis. The pandemic illuminated long standing vulnerabilities career artists face, particularly those in performing arts. This study examines how federal level policy changes can better support artists and creatives now and into the future. Four central recommendations are made: (1) Name and include artists in federal policy; (2) Recognize how creative work happens; (3) Center equity; and (4) Think locally, share nationally. These recommendations are widely applicable to local arts agencies, local government entities, and arts-based organizations.

The several case studies in this toolkit explore the increasing number of artist residency programs run by or run in partnership with city governments. Artist residency programs introduce an artist to a level of city government or specific department and ask them to use their creative problem solving skills to address civic processes and challenges.

ArtPlace America Commemorative 10-year Book

Artplace America started out with the goal, “to amplify the power of the arts in building healthy, equitable, and sustainable communities”. As a result of this goal, they funded nearly 300 creative placemaking initiatives across the country, generated landmark research, and brought together a diverse community in 10 years. This book, offered either online or as a made to order physical copy, contains the story of how Artplace America achieved so much within their 10-year time limit.

Art Place 2020 Summit Videos

In October 2020, Artplace America hosted a summit to showcase the decade of work that artists, community developers, government officials, and many more have contributed to the ArtPlace America mission. Within five different hour-long videos, key parts of the summit, including plenaries and workshops, are now viewable on Artplace America’s Youtube channel.

BUILDING COMMUNITY WEALTH THROUGH ARTS, CULTURE, AND EQUITABLE DEVELOPMENT

Through a partnership with Common Future, a community development intermediary, Artsplace America created this invitation to action The research by Danya Sherman examines the intersection of arts and culture and community wealth building. The goal of this research is to show funders how arts and culture in conjunction with community economic development can strengthen a community’s wealth.

A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF ARTPLACE’S CROSS-SECTOR RESEARCH

Culminating from six years of research, Arts Place America developed this infographic in order to discuss how the arts and culture sector can support equitable community development in 13 key ways across 10 distinct sectors. Through collaborative and comprehensive research methods, this interactive infographic delves into each topic; ultimately highlighting how creative placemaking is an interdisciplinary field requiring big-picture thinking.

CENTERING CREATIVE YOUTH IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Partnering with Creative Generation, Arts Place America seeks to answer the question: what impact do creative youth have on communities? Through nine case studies, three findings are articulated. This report is meant to show the power of young persons in generating social change, the responsibility adults have in fostering that power, and the potential in empowering young people.

Creative Placemaking Work in Local Government

Geared towards local government managers, this resource serves as a guidepost for municipal managers towards generating or creating creative placemaking efforts. It addresses creative placemaking’s main tenets while combatting misconceptions. Through an interactive tag system and case studies, readers are able to engage with this resource to understand creative placemaking’s ability to generate opportunity and provide solutions towards equity and community development.

Creative Placemaking: Sparking Development with Arts and Culture

This report explains the benefit creative placemaking confers to developers. It further answers the questions of how developers can plan for and understand the economic incentive for utilizing creative placemaking in their projects.

Handbook for Artists Working in Community

A 116-page resource guide serves as a way for artists who would like to start or enhance their work within communities. The resource is broken into five sections: Artist Groundwork, Community Groundwork, Project Formation, Project Implementation, and Group Participation Tools.

Overlooked Anchors: Advancing a New Standard of Practice

This report serves as a call to action to the arts sector to propagate equitable local economic growth through the “anchor framework” and describes how the arts sector through creative placemaking can foster community development and local economic growth. Through case studies of arts and culture organizations, it discusses the challenges and potential solutions for engagement with and within anchor institutions.

Rethinking Neighborhood Change and Tracking Progress

This report offers an examination of how to assess creative placemaking initiatives and, in general, community development strategies that target urban inequality. It offers key takeaways on how creative placemaking affects these kinds of communities.
